Major Components of English 3
Literature
We will examine literature and informational text of the United States, discussing Puritans, Romantics, Transcendentalists, Realists, and Modernists. There will be short stories, poems, essays, plays and novels.
Writing
Remember the important traits of good writing: idea and content, word choice, voice, fluency. Informal assignments include analytical responses to readings and creating responses to writing prompts as well as note-taking in class. Formal assignments include a research paper.
Vocabulary
Vocabulary is a major component of this class, both text-based and academic. We will be generating lists from the texts used in context. There will be regular quizzes on words with an emphasis on using them in order to increase verbal as well as written fluency.
Grammar, Punctuation, Mechanics
As always, the conventions of good writing apply. They will be reviewed as needed.
